HOLME AND COLNE VALLEY BEAGLES TERRIER AND LURCHER SHOW - 19TH AUGUST 2018

The Holme and Colne Valley Beagles Terrier and Lurcher Show was held at Crosland Moor on the 19th August 2018.

The day started with sheets of fine rain on a strong gusty wind but cleared mid morning just leaving the blustery wind.  I went when the rain had all but expired.  So a few photos of the event.  I know nothing of terriers and lurchers but there is a strong following similar to the passion there once was for pigeons in some areas.  The HCVB, as they are known by this acronym these days, not to be confused with other HCVBs that appear on Google search, run this event annually and it is well supported and a fun day even for those with a casual interest.

It was tough for the stallholders as the strong gusty wind wanted to take their tents away so some took them down and did without.  Not so bad for leads etc..

Was there terrier racing? Probably not. There was lurcher racing, but it was held in the morning before I arrived so all I saw of any racing was this, four lurchers in pursuit of a 'hare'; a bit of cloth.  Terrier racing in particular is fun, so I am sorry to miss it if it ever took place.  At a CVB event some years ago, more for the members of the CVB and supporters, it was a fun day out of not just terrier racing but also for everyone's dog to have a go.  This event is a much more serious one.

After the one race I saw an odd lucher chase the cloth 'hare' which stopped dead unexpectedly causing the lurcher to tumble and make a fast recovery.

On the horizon is Castle Hill, a notable landmark seen for miles.  Castle Hill is a scheduled ancient monument in Almondbury overlooking Huddersfield.  It has a Victorian tower on it and once had a pub.  Some developers got a grip of things and were building a monstrosity there some years ago which breached the planning conditions and so had to be pulled down.  Undaunted there may be another application to defile this site with another money making enterprise although generally speaking I think many locals don't want it.  'The Thandis plan a ‘public-private’ scheme that will provide visitor facilities, space for educational and research work and supervision of the site'. At first sight I wondered if this was a young harrier but I spoke to the chap from Halifax who owns it and he says it was purchased online and is a harrier/beagle cross.  It is the second one I have seen that was bought on-line.
