MY BEAGLING REVIEW IN THREE PARTS OF THE YEAR 2006 – PART ONE

The beginning of the year 2006 – to the end of the 2005-2006 Season.

A sing in the local pub after the afternoon out.  The gloomy look is a bit misleading!

17th January – the Billy Busfield Memorial Sing. An annual singing competition with participants from the local packs and others in memory of the late Billy Busfield of the Pennine Foxhounds whose life was unfortunately cut short.

The late Graham O’Brien competing in the competition, former huntsman of the CVB and a big influence in the packs of the area who had a treasure trove of old traditional and other songs in his repertoire.

The event was held in the White House between Meltham and Slaithwaite, which sadly is now no longer a pub.  It has provided wonderful hospitality in its history to the local hunts and others.

Another of our larger than life characters and a big supporter of local events, as well as a fine craftsman in stone, who is singing a version of ‘Come Blow the Candle Out’.  He has a lovely singing voice although that particular song does not do it justice. Copyright image by David Swanbury

Ladies sing too. I suppose I could title this 'The Singing Policewoman!'

The Hadyn Thorp Memorial Meet, for another young chap who passed away at a very young age, is held at his farm by the three local packs, the Colne Valley Beagles, the Holme Valley Beagles and the Pennine Foxhounds on the 11th February.  Copyright image by David Swanbury

The two packs of beagles combined but in those days assembled individually and this is the Colne Valley Beagles waiting to move off.

The Holme Valley Beagles, smart and glamorous with red uniformed huntsman ready to go.  At that time they were flirting with the Ecclesfield Beagles but retaining their individuality. Copyright image by David Swanbury

The combined HVB and CVB moving off led by the HVB Huntsman.  Since then the HVB established a permanent relationship with the CVB. Sadly I suppose the red livery of their huntsman will not be seen again.  Pity as it adds a bit of a dash to the photography.   In fact, from the 1st May 2017 there is no longer a Holme Valley Beagles or a Colne Valley Beagles as separate entities.  The merging, a bit late in the day really, of the two packs, has now officially created the Holme and Colne Valley Beagles.  So now a new bland uniform and no more red anywhere.  Sad.

The two huntsmen and a current Master.  The HVB’s lightly built athletic huntsman perfectly turned out as always in his rather dashing outfit.

18th February with the Colne Valley Beagles at south Crosland from the Bull’s Head.  The well known Castle Hill, the site of a Bronze Age or Early Iron Age hill fort overlooking Huddersfield is in the distance.  The present structure correctly known as the Victoria Tower is a scheduled ancient monument and the stone for this came from quarries close to where the area where the CVB are show here. Copyright image by David Swanbury

21st February and a couple of days or so in North Yorkshire in the Goathland area.  Generally an annual event attended by several individual packs enjoying this wonderful and different countryside.Copyright image by David Swanbury

From this point on the Blogspot system refuses to let me use my chosen font and size and I cannot figure out why!  Drat it!.  On some later posts, yet to be seen, it seems to work again on and off. Strange system.  Some look OK on draft then goes small type on posting.

At the beginning of March the Colne Valley Beagles had a trip to visit the Brighton and Storrington Beagles Country.  The photos are maybe a bit out of order.  But the Downs were a new experience.Copyright image by David Swanbury

Even the hound on the bottom left (no pun) is taking notice of the instructions.

There was excellent hospitality being acknowledged by the CVB Master.
