WILLS O'NATS - CVB HARVEST HOME

Wills O’Nats I take to mean William, son of Nathaniel although I know nothing of it’s history, is a star in our CVB firmament, always with an outstanding welcome and hospitality.  Our hosts, Joyce and Bob fortunately enjoy our company as we enjoy theirs and after those cold winter days on the moors from a meet at their pub there is a feast of delicious stew and dumplings waiting – free!

So the Colne Valley Beagles had a Harvest Home at the ‘Wills’ on Sunday.  This is one of three being held in pubs in areas we take the hounds and who support us so well.  Basically it involves auctioning off seasonal produce that has been contributed including the world renowned Mrs Merrick’s Lemon Curd, which fetches astronomical bids due its alleged stimulating properties as an organic alternative to the blue pills.

Around here one can bring dogs into some pubs, the Wills certainly, a bit like the freedom one finds in the Lakes.  So there were a few cluttering up the Yorkshire stone flagged floor, but so well behaved despite one being only a juvenile called Lily.

Part of the fund raising was the turnip.  I was told it had been sitting on the bar  for some days with a hammer for company so coins could be hammered in.  This turnip was auctioned off in a wave of frantic bidding and must have been one of the most expensive turnips ever. Someone will have fun boiling it up to release the coins to see if they made a profit.

Lily’s view of the so called singing that followed the auction accorded with mine and she fell asleep despite the fact that it was about as melodious as the Sex Pistols and as noisy, although I suppose it kept people entertained with humour and novelty value.  More performance art than singing without the art I think.  There were two striking rays of sunshine though when one young lady with her wonderful mezzo soprano voice sang like an angel and brought the house down.  She kept them quiet!  She is in the first picture as our auctioneer is taking bids

RYDAL HOUND SHOW AND SHEEPDOG TRIALS

The forecast was rain.  Apart from a short shower it stayed fine all day.  As the hound show finished the heavens opened and it rained as only it can rain in the Lake District until sometime in the night when it finally wore itself out.

Holcombe Harriers took the Harrier championship, Newcastle and District Beagles the  Beagles championship and a lot more besides, and Coniston scored in the Fell hounds, being Supreme Show Champion against the beagle and harrier champions and the champion terrier.

So some of the photos I took during the course of the day with a lunch break, some being taken in style.

I have had to redo these pics.  I originally processed them on my laptop and I think the screen must be too bright as having seen them on my PC I realise they were all too dark.  I will have to figure out how to calibrate it.
