HOLME AND COLNE VALLEY BEAGLES (HCVB) OUT AND ABOUT.

The season for the Holme and Colne Valley Beagles has started and the Opening Meet was held on the 29th September.

Some lady Whips too!  I saw little of the day as the huntsman hiked off up the long steep incline of the side of the Pennines and was soon out of sight and so that was my day gone.  But then I was also distracted for a couple of hours or so by a lady who had taken a bad tumble on the rocky ground

The Barbecue and Hound Racing at the kennels on the 7th October.

It was about 10C but a really enjoyable social event.  Local butcher Brindon Addy's sausages and burgers are always brilliant and the chef cooked them to a treat.

I wondered what the hound racing would be about.  There were three races with six hounds in each.  Their names were up on a board for selection and to help identification they each wore a different coloured neckerchief.  So, selections being made below.

Obviously a very serious business

It was too dark in the wood for my camera to show the racing but the six hounds of each race were taken up a track in the wood for some distance and told to stay - which they will do.  In fact I knew a lady who had beagles and she specialised in winning obedience competitions with them.  So it goes to show they are just as responsive as any other breed, which might surprise the odd beagle owner.  Anyway they are told to wait while the huntsman goes back to  the assembled punters at the finishing line then they are told to start.

The best I could do is this soft focus shot of one of the competitors giving its best shot at winning.

The lovely little cottage looks much as it ever did

Maybe a bit more habitable now though!  Been brought up to date recently.  This old photo has been on a previous post and also features on the commemorative  CVB Centenary plate.

There were a few puppies to look at and play with, for children especially.

These two had been walked by the lady and have now come back to the kennels.  I have explained 'walking' a couple of times in previous posts

The beagles have a large expanse of land on which to exercise and play. with a bit of it looking somewhat lunar as it was part of an ancient quarry.
