COLNE VALLEY BEAGLES PUPPY SHOW

Copyright image by David Swanbury

For once this May, a lovely mild sunny day for an event.

The Puppy Show is to choose from the previous year’s litters the best looking hounds and award those who walked puppies, that they brought back to the kennels this Spring, for the care and valuable experience they have given the young beagles.  Previous posts mentioned the role of puppy walkers who volunteer to give new puppies a home until they are old enough to join the pack.  I suppose it was a joint event with the Holme Valley Beagles, as they had a puppy or so showing,  being kennelled with the CVB.

A neglected feeling ‘spangle’ whose owner is running the refreshment tent.  This 15 week old puppy whose name I forget, is the result of a privately owned innocent and demure young beagle being left unattended in the company of a randy spaniel – hence a ‘spangle’.

Part of the judging process is to throw biscuits about for the hounds to chase to show how they move.  Pictures like this have been used by the CVB for raising a bit of money called ‘Spot the Biscuit’.  Prints with the biscuit removed give participants, for 10p a time, the chance to mark where they think the biscuit might be with a small prize for the winner who marked nearest to the biscuit.  To make it easy I have left the biscuit on this photo and there are no prizes for finding it as it is dead easy.  Answer shown at the end.

I have heard tell of a British Standard Handful – is this one I wonder?

I think this hound is a lovely beagle, so alert, active and full of joie de vivre.

A presentation to Meryl Walmsley Hon. Sec. for 30 years of dedicated service to the CVB.  Known by many around the country Meryl has been a stalwart of the CVB rarely missing any event and has been an inspiration of stability, kindness, helpfulness and knowledge.

Meryl was presented on behalf of all in the CVB with a ‘A Book of Britain’.  This beautiful and rather expensive book is by Sir Johnny Scott who freely provided and dedicated this volume to Meryl for her unstinting support of the CVB over the last 30 years as Hon Sec.
Who is he?

Towards the end the midges arrived and some smoke and a flat cap seems like a good idea.
